De Quervain’s Release

Introduction

When symptoms do not improve with non-surgical measures, surgery is recommended.

The aim of surgery is to release the constriction around the nerves and hence minimise swelling and irritation.

Procedure

Surgery is under local or general anaesthesia. Surgery takes approx. 10-15 minutes and is performed as a day surgery procedure.

An approximately 1-2 cm incision is made over the wrist (near the base of the thumb) where the two tendons reside in a compartment / sheath. The sheath is released, and the tendons are freed up with more room to move.

The skin is closed with sutures and covered with a bandage

Recovery

  • Commence hand and thumb movement immediately.
  • Hand physiotherapy may be required to regain movement and reduce selling.
  • Drive when comfortable.
  • Return to work when comfortable (usually within 1-2 weeks).

Results

The results in majority of cases are excellent with complete relief of symptoms and return to normal use of hand.

It may take several weeks for power and pain to return to normal.

Risks and Complications

These include:

  • Incomplete relief of symptoms.
  • Nerve damage causing sensitivity.
